Robert Murray M'Cheyne - Bonar - X - Chapter 6 commenced

Required reading
Robert Murray M'Cheyne by Andrew Bonar (Available from Amazon or free here) - Commence Chapter 6 (The latter days of his ministry) by reading up to the paragraph commencing '2. Reformation in Secret Prayer'.

My summary
Now M'Cheyne's health takes another turn for the worse.  Yet he labours on.  He even makes a trip with other ministers to the north of England and preaches both in the open air and in the places of worship belonging to the Presbyterians and to the Wesleyan Methodists.

Today we also read of his attendance at the Presbyterian Convocation.

And we again see M'Cheyne's striving for personal holiness.  This is particularly apparent through Bonar including a short tract that M'Cheyne wrote down for his own use, entitled 'Reformation'.  Today we only read the first main point of the tract which is 'Personal Reformation' and is made up of three subpoints showing that the Christian should aim:
(i) To maintain a conscience void of offence;
(ii) To be filled with the Holy Spirit;
(iii) To gain entire likeness to Christ.

What grabbed me
The tract on 'Reformation' is shaping up to be truly excellent.  M'Cheyne really hungered for holiness.

But I also like other hints at his holiness in today's reading: 'Almost the last note in his diary is dated December 25. "This day ordained four elders, and admitted a fifth, who will all, I trust, be a blessing in this place when I am gone.  Was graciously awakened a great while before day, and had two hours alone with God.  Preached with much comfort on 1 Tim. V. 17, "Let the elders that rule well," &c.'

Sleep is a blessing.  But I do love it when God graciously awakens you long before your day usually commences.  It is such an opportunity to redeem the time and draw close to him before anyone else rises and distracts you.

And today is one of those days for me, it is currently 4:38AM and I have been up a good while already.

Next week's reading
Conclude Chapter 6
(The latter days of his ministry).

Now it's your turn
