My summary
Today we begin a new biography in the club, one on the life of Matthew Henry.

Today's reading is the author's Preface in which we are told of:
(i) the reasons for writing biographies in general;
(ii) a previous biography by Tong that was deficient, yet valuable;
(iii) the reasons for writing this biography;
(iv) the sources used;
(v) some reflections on the life of Henry.

What grabbed me
I enjoyed this hint of what is to come: 'Reflections are, in the main, left to the reader. And the nature of the evidence adduced is such (not being originally intended for the public eye) as will enable him to form a correct opinion. He will see a "Saint of the Lord," in the walks of life, incessantly discharging its active duties ; he will behold him in solitude, contemplating himself and the busy world; he will continually hear him " speaking "- as from the tomb — in strains of wisdom, peculiarly solemn, devout, and impressive'

I've always appreciated Matthew Henry's commentary and so am looking forward to learning more about him.
