Death of death in the death of Christ - Owen - XX - Chapter 6 of Book 4 continued

Required reading
Death of death in the death of Christ by John Owen (Available from Amazon or free here) - Continue Chapter 6 of Book 4 by reading up to the paragraph beginning 'Proof 8. “The restoration wrought by Christ in his own body for mankind is set forth in Scripture to be as large and full for all men, and of as much force, as the fall of the first Adam, by and in himself, for all men; in which respect the first Adam is said to have been a figure of Christ, the second Adam, Rom. iii. 22–25, v. 12, 14, 18; 1 Cor. xv. 21, 22, 45–47: as is before shown, chap. viii.”'.

My summary
This week Owen continues to give answers to the arguments of Thomas More in the twentieth chapter of his book, 'The Universality of God's Free Grace'.

Last week Owen answered the first five arguments.

This week Owen begins to answer the lengthy sixth argument which is basically a list of Scripture proofs that More believed proved universal atonement.

Today we only read Owen's rebuttal of More's interpretation of the first seven scriptural proofs, much of which is very familiar material.

What grabbed me
Today Owen called free-will an 'idol' which I must admit resonates with me.

If you trust that you are saved because your 'free-will' chose to believe in Jesus, then your 'free-will' has become the means of your salvation.  Your faith is ultimately in your 'free-will', not Christ.  In effect, 'free-will' has become an idol which you worship before Christ.

And the way some people cling to their doctrine of free-will it does make you wonder whether they'd rather cling to it than Christ.

Next week's reading
Conclude Chapter 6 of Book 4.
