The obedience of a Christian man by William Tyndale (Available from Amazon or free here) - Conclude the section entitled 'The four senses of the Scripture' by reading up to the section headed 'A compendious rehearsal of that which goeth before'.
Last week Tyndale taught about the different methods of interpretation.
This week Tyndale gives a whole stream of examples of false interpretations of Scripture by Roman Catholics, including on subjects such as:
(i) the rock of the church;
(ii) the binding and loosing of sin;
(iii) the use of the sword;
(iv) miracles;
(v) the armour of God.
I loved this clear statement about the purpose of the Scriptures: 'The Scriptures spring out of God, and flow unto Christ, and were given to lead us to Christ. Thou must therefore go along by the Scripture as by a line, until thou come at Christ, which is the way's end and resting- place. If any man, therefore, use the Scripture to draw thee from Christ, and to nosel [the footnote explains that this word means to nursle, to nurse up] thee in any thing save in Christ, the same is a false prophet.'
Whatever passage of Scripture you may read, understand that its purpose is to lead you to Christ.
