The Fundamentals - Torrey - XXVIII - Chapter 6 (Fulfilled prophecy a potent argument for the Bible) commenced

Required reading
The Fundamentals edited by R. A. Torrey (Available from Amazon or free here) - Commence Chapter 6 (Fulfilled prophecy a potent argument for the Bible) by reading up to the heading 'The book of Daniel'.

My summary
Now Gaebelein begins to teach us about the importance of prophecy in the Bible: 'The Bible is the only book in the world which contains predictions. It is pre-eminently that, which no other book could be, and none other is, a book of prophecy. These predictions are declared to be the utterances of Jehovah ; they show that the Bible is a supernatural book, the revelation of God.'

Firstly Gaebelein teaches us about the different classes of prophecy:
(i) past;
(ii) present;
(iii) future.

Then Gaebelein briefly focuses on the messianic prophecies and their fulfillment.

Next we look at prophecies concerning the Jewish people and how they have been fulfilled.

Then Gaebelein turns to prophecies about other nations and their fulfilment, for example Babylonia, Assyria, Egypt, Ammon, Moab, Tyre, Sidon and Idumea.

What grabbed me
Although I may not have agreed with Gaebelein's interpretations of some of the Biblical prophecies, I did agree with this statement: '...it is deplorable that the professing Church of today almost completely ignores and neglects the study of prophecy, a neglect which has for one of its results the loss of one of the most powerful weapons against infidelity. The denial of the Bible as the inspired Word of God has become widespread.'

The importance of prophecy in the Scriptures is often understated.
