A remedy for wandering thoughts in worship by Richard Steele (Available from Heritage Books or free here) - Commence Chapter 7 by reading Sections I to V.
This week he speaks about the evil of distractions because of their nature. Next week Steele will talk about the evil of distractions due to their effects.
So firstly, distractions in God's worship are evil because they are:
(i) against the first table of the law (ten commandments);
(ii) heart sins;
(iii) sins in the special presence of God;
(iv) sins about the most serious business;
(v) sins of hypocrisy.
I found helpful the point that distractions are evil because they are done in the special presence of God: 'To believe that you are sitting, standing, kneeling before God should make you perfect. How seriously doth the child stand before his father, the scholar before his master ? and shall the child of God only forget himself? the poorest scholar, before the best masters?'
It is amazing how attentive we are in the presence of humans yet before our God we are so easily distracted.
