Forty-Six Sermons in Volume II of the Works by Jonathan Edwards (Available from Amazon or free here) - Read the Sermon entitled 'Unbelievers contemn the glory and excellency of Christ'.
This week's sermon is on the text: 'This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders (Acts 4:11)'.
Edwards' doctrine from the passage is: 'Unbelievers set at nought the glory and excellency in Christ.'
Firstly Edwards asserts that unbelievers set at nought the excellency of Christ's:
(i) person;
(ii) work and office.
Then Edwards provides evidences of the truth of this doctrine, namely, unbelievers do not:
(i) give Christ honour;
(ii) give Christ love;
(iii) desire to enjoy Christ;
(iv) seek conformity to Christ's excellency.
Then Edwards applies his text by showing that this doctrine teaches us:
(i) the heinousness of the sin of unbelief;
(ii) the greatness of our guilt.
What grabbed me
I appreciated the contrast Edwards made between our attitude to Christ and God's attitude to Christ: 'Consider not only how much the angels set by the glory of Christ, but how much God himself sets by it: for he is the darling of heaven, he was eternally God’s delight; and because of his glory God hath thought him worthy to be appointed the heir of all things, and hath seen fit to ordain that all men should honour the Son even as they honour the Father.—Is he thus worthy of the infinite esteem and love of God himself? and is he worthy of no esteem from you? '
If God himself makes much of Christ, then we should too!
