The Fundamentals - Torrey - LIII - Chapter 12 (The doctrines that must be emphasized in successful evangelism) & Chapter 13 (Preach the word)

Required reading
The Fundamentals edited by R. A. Torrey (Available from Amazon or free here) - Read Chapter 12 (The doctrines that must be emphasized in successful evangelism) and Chapter 13 (Preach the word).

My summary
Today we read two chapters.

In the first and longer chapter Munhall teaches us about successful evangelism, which he defines as 'preaching the Gospel according to Divine conditions and directions'.  The majority of the chapter is given to discussing what doctrines should be taught in evangelism:
(i) sin;
(ii) redemption through Jesus' blood;
(iii) resurrection;
(iv) justification;
(v) regeneration;
(vi) repentance;
(vii) conversion;
(viii) faith;
(ix) obedience;
(x) assurance.

Then in the second chapter we read today, Crosby encourages us to preach.  In particular, 'the word'.

What grabbed me
I loved Munhall's discussion of successful evangelism, particularly his points about what success is not.

For example: 'First of all, What constitutes Successful Evangelism? Some will answer, "Great audiences, eloquent preaching and soul-stirring music." But I reply, "We may have all these and not have real evangelism; as we may have successful evangelism without them."  Others will answer, "Any movement that will add large numbers to the membership of the churches." I reply, "We may have successful evangelism and not many be added to the churches ; and, we may have large numbers added to the churches' membership without successful evangelism."'

The last point is vital to grasp.

Despite what many think, increased numbers are not necessarily indicative of successful evangelism!

Next week's reading
Read Chapter 14 (Pastoral and personal evangelism).
