We hear about Bunyan's:
(i) response to advice from Mr Gifford;
(ii) rejection of the Quakers;
(iii) delight in Luther's commentary on Galatians;
(iv) temptation to sell Christ and then his giving in to the temptation;
(v) comparison of his sin of selling Christ with other great sinners like Peter, David, Hezekiah, Solomon, Judas, Cain and Manasseh;
(vi) struggle with what Hebrews says about God's rejection of Esau and his own rejection of God.
Bunyan's struggle is sad to witness.
Particularly when Bunyan is so close to helpful truth: 'At the same time also I had my sin, and the blood of Christ thus represented to me, that my sin, when compared to the blood of Christ, was no more to it, than this little clot or stone before me, is to this vast and wide field that here I see. This gave me good encouragement for the space of two or three hours; in which time also, methought I saw, by faith, the Son of God, as suffering for my sins; but because it tarried not, I therefore sunk in my spirit, under exceeding guilt again.'
His sin is indeed nothing in the blood of Christ.
Bunyan may be a great sinner, but Christ is an even greater saviour.
