Institutes of Christian religion - Calvin - LIII - Chapter 22 of Book 3

Required reading
Institutes of Christian religion by John Calvin (Available from Amazon or free here) -
Read Chapter 22.

My summary
This week Calvin gives us some proofs for the doctrine of election.

Calvin looks for support from:
(i) the Bible, particularly Ephesians and Romans;
(ii) the church fathers, particularly Augustine and Ambrose;

One of the main objections Calvin answers is from the advocates of foreknowledge.  They insist that the origin and cause of election is to be found in the virtues and vices of men.

What grabbed me
I liked this line which Calvin sourced from Augustine.  It refutes those who think that God's foreknowledge of our lives determines his choice: 'The grace of God does not find, but makes persons fit to be chosen.'

Any 'fitness' in us is only because of God's grace.

Next week's reading
