Christian's daily walk - Scudder - III - Chapter 2 (Of beginning the day with God)

--> Required reading The Christian's daily walk, in holy security and peace by Henry Scudder (Available from Amazon or free here) - Read Chapter 2 (Of beginning the day with God).

My summary
Today Scudder gives us advice on how to begin the day with God.

We learn:
(i) how to awake with God (including how to dress);
(ii) to begin the day by renewed faith and repentance;
(iii) how to pray;
(iv) about signs of worldly-mindedness in devotion, and remedies against it.

What grabbed me
I love this book.  It is so practical.

I particularly found helpful the instruction on what to do when one awakes: 'In the instant of awaking let your heart be lifted up to God with a thankful acknowledgment of his mercy to you. For it is he that giveth his beloved sleep, Psa. cxxvii. 2; who keepeth you both in soul and body while you sleep, Prov. vi. 22 ; who reneweth his mercies every morning, Lam. iii. 22, 23. For, while you sleep, you are as it were out of actual possession of yourself, and all things else. Now, it was God that kept you, and all that you had, and restored them again, with many new mercies, when you awaked. '

Every time we open our eyes, we have much to be thankful for.

Next week's reading

Read Chapter 3 (Directions for walking with God, in the progress of the day).
