Christian's daily walk - Scudder - IV - Chapter 3 (Directions for walking with God, in the progress of the day)

--> Required reading The Christian's daily walk, in holy security and peace by Henry Scudder (Available from Amazon or free here) - Read Chapter 3 (Directions for walking with God, in the progress of the day).

My summary
This week Scudder gives us advice on how to live our days.

Firstly he encourages us to apply ourselves to the business of the day - doing all as in God's sight.

Secondly Scudder teaches superiors how to behave, then inferiors.

Thirdly Scudder advises us on bodily care, such as eating and drinking, and times of relaxation.

What grabbed me
I liked Scudder's point about the purpose of recreation: 'In all recreations you must propose the right end; the nearest and immediate end is to revive your weary body, and to quicken your dull mind ; but your highest and principal end is, that with this refreshed body and quickened spirit, you may the better serve, and glorify God, 1 Cor. x. 31; that whether you eat or drink, or whatsoever you do else, all may be done to the glory of God.'

Entertainment should never be an end in itself, but should be used to refresh our bodies for further service.

Next week's reading

Commence Chapter 4 (Of religious fasting) by reading up to the heading 'Self judging for sin'.
