This week Martin teaches us about the importance of the Lord's Day.
Firstly Martin gives us a brief explanation why the Lord's Day is the new Sabbath.
Then Martin tells that we need a Sabbath because:
(i) the body needs it;
(ii) the mind needs it;
(iii) the soul needs it.
Martin then gives us some advice about the application of his teaching.
So although I did agree with the author about the need for a day of relaxation, I wasn't convinced by the short discussion of why Sunday is the new Saturday: 'The disciples also desired to commemorate the greatest of all events since the world's creation, namely, the resurrection of our Lord, for it was on the first day of the week that Jesus made His first five appearances. It was also on the first day of the week that the Holy Spirit was given, therefore Pentecost was commemorated, on that day. (Acts 2.) It was on this day also; that the great tidings of salvation were first preached to the multitudes. (Acts 2.) The first lay became the day in which all the early Christians assembled for worship, and for communion. (Acts 20:7 and 1 Cor. 11:23.) It was the day also in which the prophecy of Revelation was granted to St. John on Patmos. (Rev. 1:10.)'.
Just because the disciples did things on a Sunday does not mean that they considered Sunday the same as the Old Testament Sabbath.
Interestingly, nowhere in the New Testament is the Lord's Day called Sabbath.
