Now we begin a bunch of Traill's sermons on Hebrews 10:20-24.
Today's sermon is on 'Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering' Hebrews 10:23.
Firstly Traill looks at what the faith that is professed is - basically it is belief in God.
Secondly Traill explores what is in the profession of the faith. It is a profession that is made with:
(i) words;
(ii) deeds.
Then Traill teaches that whoever has Christian faith should make a Christian profession of it because of:
(i) Christ's glory;
(ii) the good of others;
(iii) Christ's concern for the profession.
What grabbed me
I appreciated the encouragement to profess Christ in my family: 'People may and should make a profession of their faith in their conversations in their families. This is one part of Christian profession, that every one that has a family, that he is master or she is mistress of, are obliged to make profession of their faith there. The Christian conduct of a family is a very honourable way of professing faith. I will behave myself wisely, says David, in a perfect way: O when wilt thou come unto me ? I will walk within my house with a perfect hearty Psal. ci. 2. Several good words he speaks there of his purpose of owning of God, and declaring his respect to him, by his conduct in his family.'
A bit scary to think that the way my children behave is part of my profession of faith in Christ!
