Christian's daily walk - Scudder - VIII - Chapter 7 (How to walk with God alone)

Required reading
The Christian's daily walk, in holy security and peace by Henry Scudder (Available from Amazon or free here) - Read Chapter 7 (How to walk with God alone).

My summary
Firstly, today, Scudder gives us some rules on spending time alone.

Secondly Scudder teaches us about reading, including:
(i) how to read profitably;
(ii) who must read the Scriptures;
(iii) motives to read Scripture;
(iv) how to read men's writings profitably.

Thirdly Scudder gives us some advice on meditation.  We learn:
(i) the distinct acts and parts of meditation;
(ii) rules for meditation;
(iii) cautions about the matter of meditation;
(iv) motives for meditation.

What grabbed me
I appreciated Scudder's warnings about the dangers of being alone: 'And beware in particular, lest you commit alone, by yourself, contemplative wickedness, Mic. ii. 1, Psa. xxxvi. 4, Matt. v. 28 ; which is, when by feeding your fancy, and pleasing yourself in covetous, lustful, revengeful, ambitious, or other wicked thoughts, you act that in your mind and fancy, which, either for fear, or shame, you dare not, or for want of opportunity or means, you cannot act otherwise. '

When we're alone, that is often when Satan seizes his opportunity.

Next week's reading
Read Chapter 8 (Of company in general).
