Required reading
The Christian's daily walk, in holy security and peace by Henry Scudder (Available from Amazon or free here) - Continue Chapter 15 (Concerning false fears) by reading Section 10.
My summary
Today Scudder continues to instruct us about how false fears are impediments to peace.
Scudder in particular deals with reasons Christians fear they are not sanctified. Such fears arise because of:
(i) the want of deep humiliation;
(ii) the intrusion of many evil thoughts;
(iii) the prevalence of some gross sin;
(iv) the want of affectionate sorrow for sin;
(v) dulness in spiritual duties;
(vi) sudden dulness after duties;
(vii) being outdone by others;
(viii) a sense of the hardness of heart.
What grabbed me
I appreciated Scudder's comment about the different reasons for grieving sin: 'The former terrors and troubles are caused, either only for fear of hell, and the fierce wrath of God, but not for sin ; or, if at all for sin, it is only in respect of the punishment. These tending to conversion, are also caused through fear of hell, but not only ; the heart of one thus troubled is grieved because of his sin, and that not only because it deserves hell, but because by it he has offended and dishonoured God.'
Sin should grieve us not simply because it hurts us, but because it also hurts God.
