Required reading
Christ's doctrine of the atonement by George Smeaton (Available from Amazon or free here) - Read the Preface and Preliminary Remarks.
My summary
Today we begin a new work from Smeaton on the atonement.
In the Preface Smeaton tells us the purpose of the work: 'My task in this work has been simply to determine, by strict exegetical investigation, the import of Christ's words, and to reproduce His thoughts by the exact interpretation of language.' He also gives us some reasons why the book is necessary.
Then in the Preliminary Remarks Smeaton outlines how he will accomplish his objective.
What grabbed me
I liked the end to the Preface: 'I have only to add, that the preparation of this volume has given me much pleasant meditation ; and I send it forth, with the prayer that the Great Teacher may use it to turn men's minds away from unprofitable speculation, to listen to His own voice.'
Let's hope that Smeaton's prayer is answered as we read together.
Next week's reading
