Required reading
The Letters of Samuel Rutherford (Available from Amazon or free here) - Read Letters 48 to 52.
My summary
Today we read letters addressed to:
(i) Marion M'Naught;
(ii) James Bautie;
(iii) Thomas Corbet;
(iv) William Glendinning.
Rutherford spoke about:
(i) his ministry situation;
(ii) how to overcome struggles with assurance;
(iii) suffering;
(iv) consolations of Christ.
What grabbed me
I appreciated the lengthy letter on assurance, particularly this advice: 'The best regenerate have their defilements, that will clog behind them all their days; and wash as they will, there will be filth in their bosom. But let not this put you from the well.'
Sin should make us run to Christ, not flee him.
Next week's reading
