Required reading
Lectures to my students by Charles Spurgeon (Available from Amazon or free here) - Read Chapter 4 (Open-air preaching).
My summary
Today Spurgeon gives us an overview of open-air preaching in history.
Spurgeon speaks of the open air preaching of:
(i) the Old Testament;
(ii) Jesus;
(iii) the apostles;
(iv) the dark ages;
(v) the Reformation;
(vi) the Puritans;
(vii) revivals in Britain and the United States.
What grabbed me
I liked this comment about the Reformation: 'I have no time for even a complete outline, but would simply ask you, where would the Reformation have been if its great preachers had confined themselves to churches and cathedrals? How would the common people have become indoctrinated with the gospel had it not been for those far wandering evangelists, the colporteurs, and those daring innovators who found a pulpit on every heap of stones, and an audience chamber in every open space near the abodes of men? '
Spurgeon is right. I'm sure the Reformation would have been very different if there was no open-air preaching.
Next week's reading
Read Chapter 5 (Open-air preaching-Remarks thereon).
