The Protector - D'Aubigne - V - Chapter 4 (Schism between the parliament and the army)

Required reading
The Protector: A vindication by J. H. Merle D'Aubigne (Available from Amazon or free here) - Read Chapter 4 (Schism between the parliament and the army).

My summary
This week we hear about troubles between the parliament and the army.

We learn about:
(i) the division between the Presbyterians (the parliament) and the independents (the army);
(ii) the king's inclinations toward the independents;
(iii) the army's desire for religious liberty as their primary purpose;
(iv) the true treacherous nature of the king's negotiations with the Cromwell.

What grabbed me
I appreciated D'Aubigne's final paragraph: 'Cromwell desired to save his King, and that, too, at the very moment the latter designed to hang him. Alas ! it was the unfortunate Stuart who was caught in the snare he was laying for others. "He that diggeth a pit shall fall into it ; and whoso breaketh a hedge, a serpent shall bite him." Such is the language of God's Word; and "there faileth not aught of any good thing which the Lord hath spoken." (Joshua xxi. 45.) '

A most astute application of scripture to the situation.

Next week's reading
Read Chapter 5 (Death of the king).
