Attraction of the cross - Spring - V - Chapter 6 (The cross accessible)

Required reading
The attraction of the cross by Gardiner Spring (Available from Amazon or free here) - Read Chapter 6 (The cross accessible).

My summary
Today Spring teaches us about the accessibility of the cross.

Last week Spring taught us about the limited atonement.  So this week he wants us to understand that we can call all people to repent, despite Christ dying only for some.

Thus Spring seeks to prove from Scripture that if anyone perishes, it is not God's fault: ' No man now perishes because there is not forgiveness with God ; no man now perishes because his fate was involved in the issue of the first apostacy ; for under this new constitution he is put on trial for and must decide for himself whether he will or will not have the gracious Mediator to rule over him.'

What grabbed me
Although I do believe in the free offer of the gospel, I'm not convinced by Spring's interpretation of these passages: 'There are not a few passages of Scripture which seem to me to give strong proof of this conclusion. "God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son ;" — he is the " propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only, but for the sins of the whole world;" — " Who gave himself a ransom for all to be testified in due time ;'' — "The Lamb of God who taketh away the sin of the world ;" — -"Christ the Saviour of the world ;" — " The bread of Gp4 is he that giveth life unto the world ;'' — " My flesh which I gave for the life of the world ;'' — " If one died for all, then were all dead ;" — "That he, by the grace of God, should taste death for every man" Passages like these must teach either that it was the design of God, by the death of his Son, to save all men, which none but the rashest Universalist believes ; or that his Son was set forth to be such a propitiation as is amply sufficient for the salvation.of all mankind, if all should repent and believe the Gospel. '

Or maybe the passages mean that Jesus died for all nations, not just Israel?

Next week's reading
Read Chapter 7 (The cross a completed justification).
