Required reading
The Protector: A vindication by J. H. Merle D'Aubigne (Available from Amazon or free here) - Read Chapter 11 (Morality, glory and antipopery of England).
My summary
This week D'Aubigne teaches us about the influence of Cromwell on England and other countries.
We learn about:
(i) the change in morality in England;
(ii) the valor of the English;
(iii) the economic prosperity of England;
(iv) the French-English treaty;
(v) English negotiations with Spain;
(vi) the battles of the English navy, including against pirates;
(vii) the fear of the Italians;
(viii) the English influence on the British Isles.
What grabbed me
I appreciated the comment on the moral influence that leaders have on a nation: 'Under the government of men making profession of godliness, vice had been compelled to wear the exterior garb of virtue ; but the moment the restraint was removed, it stalked forth without disguise, and was everywhere received with welcome.'
We must choose our leaders very carefully - their impact is often far wider than we might imagine.
Next week's reading
Read Chapter 12 (Defender of the faith).
