Required reading
The Journals of George Whitefield (Available from Amazon or free here) - Conclude 'During the Time he was detained in England...'
My summary
This week we read of Whitefield's time in:
(i) Bristol;
(ii) Bath;
(iii) Thornbury;
(iv) Gloucester;
(v) Cirencester;
(vi) Abingdon;
(vii) Basingstoke;
(viii) London.
In this reading we see further altercations with the authorities and hostile crowds.
Yet Whitefield continues to preach with great effect.
He also receives encouraging support from other believers.
What grabbed me
I liked the letter a Quaker sent to Whitefield to encourage him.
The Quaker wrote about Whitefield's preaching: 'O thy noble testimony against the profaneness and vanity of the age! It rejoice me not a little. But when thou camest to the necessity, the nature and the rewards of the new birth, thou wert carried beyond thyself. I, for one, am a monument of free grace and mercy.'
Thanks be to God that there are many monuments to his free grace and mercy in this world!
Next week's reading
Commence 'From his embarking after the embargo...' by reading up to the heading 'Philadelphia'.
