Required reading
The Journals of George Whitefield (Available from Amazon or free here) - Commence 'From his embarking after the embargo...' by reading up to the heading 'Philadelphia'.
My summary
This week we read of Whitefield's time in:
(i) Lewisham;
(ii) Deptford;
(iii) Blendon;
(iv) Bexley;
(v) Blackheath;
(vi) Chatham.
Then we learn of Whitefield's voyage to North America again. On the ship Whitefield:
(i) preaches;
(ii) administers the Lord's Supper;
(iii) writes;
(iv) reads;
(v) experiences conviction of sin.
He then lands at Pennsylvania and travels to Philadelphia.
What grabbed me
I appreciated Whitefield's honesty about his frequent sense of sin during his journey: 'A sense of my actual sins and natural deformity humbled me exceedingly; and then the freeness and riches of God's everlasting love broke in with such light and power upon my soul, that I was often awed into silence, and could not speak.'
Thankfully the Christian knows the forgiveness of sin as well as the conviction of sin.
Next week's reading
