Ante-Nicene Fathers (Volume 5) - VIII - Fragments from commentaries commenced

Required reading
Ante-Nicene Fathers (Vol 5) (Available from Amazon or free here) - Commence 'The Extant Works and Fragments of Hippolytus' by starting 'Fragments from commentaries' and reading up to the heading 'On Daniel'.

My summary
This week we start reading some comments from Hippolytus on Scripture.

We read his thoughts sections from:
(i) Genesis;
(ii) Numbers;
(iii) Kings;
(iv) Psalms;
(v) Proverbs.

What grabbed me
A lot more allegory from the Fathers that I don't agree with.

For example:

'Gen. xlix. 4 For thou wentest up to thy father's bed.
Hipp. First he mentions the event,—that in the last days the people will assault the bed of the Father, that is, the bride, the Church, with intent to corrupt her; which thing, indeed, it does even at this present day, assaulting her by blasphemies.
'

Strange, strange exegesis.

Next week's reading
Continue 'Fragments on commentaries' by reading up to the heading 'On Matthew'.
