Systematic Theology (Vol 3) - Hodge - XXV - Chapter 19 (The law) continued

Required reading
Systematic Theology by Charles Hodge (Vol 3) (Available from Amazon or free here) - Continue Chapter 19 by reading up to the subheading '13. The ninth commandment'.

My summary
This week Hodge discusses the eighth commandment.

Hodge explores various theories regarding the personal right of property, and concludes that it is even a right of nature.  Hodge rejects various forms of socialism.

Hodge also outlines specific instances of vulgar theft that are violations of the eighth commandment.

What grabbed me
I liked this comment on communism: 'It is a historical fact that Communism had its origin in its modern form in materialistic atheism ; in the denial of God, who has the right to give laws to men, and the power and the purpose to enforce those laws by the retributions of justice ; in the belief that the present life is the whole period of existence allotted to men ; and that the enjoyments of this life are, therefore, all that men have to desire or expect.'

If you believe this world is your home, you'll do everything you can to make it as comfortable as possible for yourself - including taking things that don't belong to you.

Next week's reading
Conclude Chapter 19.
