Systematic Theology (Vol 3) - Hodge - XXXV - Chapter 20 (The means of grace) continued

Required reading
Systematic Theology by Charles Hodge (Vol 3) (Available from Amazon or free here) - Continue Chapter 20 by reading up to the subheading '15. The Lord's supper'.

My summary
Firstly, this week, Hodge teaches us about the Lutheran doctrine of baptism.  We learn about:
(i) its necessity (baptism is ordinarily necessary, yet that necessity is not absolute);
(ii) its effects (regeneration and renovation);
(iii) what its efficacy refers to (the power of the Spirit inherent in the Word);
(iv) its condition (faith).

Secondly Hodge briefly looks at the Roman Catholic view of baptism.  We learn about their view of its efficacy in:
(i) remission of sin;
(ii) sanctification.

What grabbed me
Nothing really grabbed me today.  Probably because I disagree with both of the views of baptism presented.

Next week's reading
Continue Chapter 20 by reading up to the subheading '16. Doctrine of the Reformed Church on the Lord's Supper'.
