Memoirs of Jonathan Edwards in Volume I of the Works by Jonathan Edwards (Available from Amazon or free here) - Read Chapter 4.
My summary
Today we read extracts from Edwards' diary when he was nineteen years old.
Edwards speaks of his:
(i) resolutions;
(ii) time management;
(iii) love of Christ;
(iv) spiritual fervour;
(v) mortification of sin;
(vi) prayers;
(vii) Scripture reading;
(viii) love for parents;
(ix) eating/drinking/sleeping;
(x) sermons.
What grabbed me
I enjoyed hearing about this practice: 'When I am violently beset with temptation, or cannot rid myself of evil thoughts, to do something in arithmetic, or geometry, or some other study, which necessarily engages all my thoughts, and unavoidably keeps them from wandering.'
A good rule of thumb. Idle thoughts are rarely helpful.
