Required reading
Memoirs of Jonathan Edwards in Volume I of the Works by Jonathan Edwards (Available from Amazon or free here) - Read Chapter 5.
My summary
Now we learn about Edwards time as a tutor in the college at New-Haven (which, incidentally, was a time of great disorder among the students and faculty).
We also hear about Edwards habits at this time and are given the text of his diary which gives specific details of his spiritual development.
What grabbed me
I enjoy hearing Edwards' regular comments on eating: 'Tuesday, Sept. 2. By a sparingness in diet, and eating as much as may be what is light and easy of digestion, I shall doubtless be able to think more clearly, and shall gain time; 1. By lengthening out my life; 2. Shall need less time for digestion, after meals; 3. Shall be able to study more closely, without injury to my health; 4. Shall need less time for sleep; 5. Shall more seldom be troubled with the head-ache.'
We shouldn't overlook maintenance of the bodies that the Lord has given each of us.
