Important Theological Controversies - Edwards - XIV - Conclude Chapter V

Required reading

Remarks on Important Theological Controversies in Vol 2 of the Works by Jonathan Edwards (Available from Amazon or free here) - Conclude Chapter V 'Of satisfaction for sin'.

My summary
Today we continue seeing the reasonableness of the Christian doctrine of satisfaction for sin.

We hear about:
(i) the Bible's teaching on sacrifice;
(ii) the dignity of Christ;
(iii) God's threatening's;
(iv) the punishment of sin;
(v) mediators;
(vi) Christ's sufferings;
(vii) the blood of Christ;
(viii) the laws of the natural world;
(ix) the devil's arguments.

What grabbed me
I enjoyed Edwards' comment about God's love for Christ even in the midst of his wrath: 'Christ suffered the wrath of God for men’s sins in such a way as he was capable of, being an infinitely holy person, who knew that God was not angry with him personally, knew that God did not hate him, but infinitely loved him. The wicked in hell will suffer the wrath of God, as they will have the sense, and knowledge, and sight of God’s infinite displeasure towards them and hatred of them. But this was impossible in Jesus Christ. Christ therefore could bear the wrath of God in no other but these two ways.'

'Tis mystery all!

Next week's reading
Commence Chapter VI 'Concerning faith' by reading up to the paragraph commencing: '34. For a man to trust in his own righteousness, is to conceives hope of some favour of God or some freedom from his displeasure....'
