Important Theological Controversies - Edwards - XV - Commence Chapter VI

Required reading

Remarks on Important Theological Controversies in Vol 2 of the Works by Jonathan Edwards (Available from Amazon or free here) - Commence Chapter VI 'Concerning faith' by reading up to the paragraph commencing: '34. For a man to trust in his own righteousness, is to conceives hope of some favour of God or some freedom from his displeasure....'

My summary
This week we start Edwards' remarks on faith.

We learn of the connection of faith to:
(i) testimony;
(ii) belief;
(iii) receiving/accepting;
(iv) obeying;
(v) trusting;
(vi) committing;
(vii) reconciliation;
(viii) love;
(ix) thirst;
(x) submission;
(xi) embracing;
(xii) adhering;
(xiii) hope.

What grabbed me
I liked this definition of saving faith: 'Therefore, for a person to commit himself to Christ as a Saviour, is quitting all other endeavours and hopes, and heartily applying himself to Christ for salvation, fully choosing salvation by him, and acquiescing in his way of salvation, and a hearty consent of the soul to be his entirely, hoping in his sufficiency and willingness to save.'

We do nothing to save ourselves, we trust God to do it all.

Next week's reading
Continue Chapter VI 'Concerning faith' by reading up to the paragraph commencing: '67. The distinction of the several constituent parts or acts of faith...'
