Required reading
Remarks on Important Theological Controversies in Vol 2 of the Works by Jonathan Edwards (Available from Amazon or free here) - Read Chapter VII 'Concerning the perseverance of saints'.
My summary
This week we read Edwards remarks on perseverance of the saints.
We hear about:
(i) commands to persevere;
(ii) perseverance as the condition of justification;
(iii) Christ's role in perseverance;
(iv) perseverance necessity;
(v) God's covenants;
(vi) conditions of salvation;
(vii) the Spirit's role in perseverance;
(viii) those who fall away.
What grabbed me
I loved the comment that prayer presupposes God's sovereignty in man's salvation: 'If it were left to the freedom of men’s own will, whether men should persevere, in the sense that the Arminians suppose; i. e. to a will not determined by God, but self-determined, then it would be absurd to pray to God that we may persevere; that he would keep us from falling, and that he would uphold our goings in his paths.'
Amen!
