The Fundamentals edited by R. A. Torrey (Available from Amazon or free here) - Read Chapter 10 (The deity of Christ) and Chapter 11 (The virgin birth of Christ).
Firstly in Chapter Ten Warfield teaches us about the deity of Christ. Although Warfield doesn't minimise the Scriptural evidence for Christ's divinity, he also strongly advocates the proof of the Christian experience: 'The supreme proof to every Christian of the deity of his Lord is then his own inner experience of the transforming power of his Lord upon the heart and life.'
Secondly in Chapter Eleven Orr looks at the evidence for the virgin birth from the Old Testament prophecies and the Gospels. He also addresses common objections.
I liked this point about people who deny the virgin birth: 'Rejection of the Virgin birth seldom, if ever, goes by itself. As the late Prof. A. B. Bruce said, with denial of the Virgin birth is apt to go denial of the virgin life. The incarnation is felt by those who think seriously to involve a miracle in Christ's earthly origin.'
If you deny the virgin birth, it is usually a symptom of a far greater problem.

Since we've just read Justin Martyr on this very subject, I found this remark by Dr. Orr to be fascinating:
“The methods of the oldest opponents of Christianity are revived and it is likened to the Greek and Roman stories, coarse and vile, of heroes who had gods for their fathers.”
The devil has been able, even after all these centuries, to whisper the lie that Christianity is just “another” religion, neither better nor worse than those that came before, and foolish sinners that we are, he still finds listeners! Our sinful ability to believe lies over the truth never fails to amaze me, and God's amazing grace and mercy in saving such wretches is even more amazing still! Having grown up in the liberal church where this lie is well and truly alive, I know full well how soul and faith destroying it is and I praise the Lord so much for having saved me out of such lies, and for bringing me into a true, saving knowledge and faith in my Saviour Jesus.
CJ,
Thanks for sharing.
It's always good to hear your thoughts as we read together.
