Required reading
Systematic Theology Volume 1 by Charles Hodge (Available from Amazon or free here) - Conclude Chapter 2 (Theism).
My summary
Today Hodge finishes examining arguments for theism.
This week it is the moral, or anthropological, argument that is put forward.
Hodge outlines the argument with the following: 'It is no less true that every man has in himself the same irresistible evidence that God is an extramundane personal Being ; that He is intelligent, voluntary, and moral ; that He knows ; that He has the right to command ; and that He can punish and can save. '
He looks at evidence for the argument from:
(i) the existence of the mind;
(ii) the nature of the soul;
(iii) the moral nature of man.
What grabbed me
The moral argument has to be my favourite argument but I'm not sure Hodge outlined it as well as it has been done by others.
But I did like this point: 'All men are moral beings ; all have this sense of moral obligation, and of responsibility ; and no man can free himself from these convictions.'
People always have a sense of right and wrong, no matter what they may claim.
Next week's reading
Commence Chapter 3 (Anti-theistic theories) by reading up to the heading 'D. Positivism'.
